Chris says: I was prompted to start fencing when I saw a
dueling display at Warwick Castle.
It reminded me that fencing was a sport that I had been intending to try since I saw a
book of my Dad's in my youth. He was a fencer.
Searching the web the next day I saw that a beginners course was starting the same week
at The Saxon Fencing Club. Good timing!
There are initially a few essentials to learn, such as:
Pick a right handed foil and jacket (if you are right handed), a slightly loose mask is
a lot more comfortable than a slightly tight one, and most important, don't leave your
car in the car park when you go to the pub. You'll only do it once - trust me!
Sessions start with a warm-up, then coaching from Lance before we are let loose to practice
what we have learnt. I was surprised at the physical effort involved - it certainly
gets you warm, although I suspect that as a beginner I am having to rush around
a lot to try to make up for my lack of skill.
The club members are very friendly and willing to pass on tips and tactics. I hope
to carry on fencing after the course and hope some or all of the other beginners will too.
See you on Thursday,
Chris
