Anna says: At the start of 2001, having just given up a
Health Club membership, I was looking for a more interesting and absorbing way of keeping
fit. Browsing through the sports section of Time Out I saw the Saxon Fencing Club advertised.
Intrigued but not knowing anything about Fencing I decided to go along to the advertised
Beginners classes. People were friendly and welcoming and assisted in introducing the
rather alarming selection of paraphernalia involved. After the initial shock of being
squeezed into protective clothing, face mask and handed a foil, I'm beginning to enjoy
the intensive teaching from the enthusiastic and supportive coach and other club members.
Progress for me has felt slow but steady and it has been mentally as well as physically
challenging. I've enjoyed finding out about the etiquette and rituals involved in
Fencing and as I get over the initial anxiety of facing someone with a foil and
feeling like a complete amateur, it has been fun and intensely absorbing.
